Biblically, waiting is not just something we have to do until we get what we want. Waiting is part of the process of becoming what God wants us to be. ~John Ortberg

What Exactly is Idolatry?

What does it mean to be an idolater? Idolatry may seem like a sin that modern people do not commit. But idolatry is not just bowing down to idols; it is trusting in what one has made, and therefore, in one’s own power as creator or sustainer. If we say we worship God but put our trust in bank accounts, homes, businesses, and organizations, then we are idolaters.

“Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshipping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.” Romans 1: 21-25

How could intelligent people turn to idolatry? My NLT Commentary says that idolatry begins when people reject what they know about God. Instead of looking to Him as Creator and Sustainer of all life, they see themselves as the center of the universe. They soon invent “gods” that are convenient projections of their own selfish desires. These gods may be wooden figures, or they may also be goals or things we pursue, such as money, power, or possessions. They may even be misrepresentations of God Himself—making God in our image, instead of the reverse. The common denominator is this: Idolaters worship the things God made rather than God himself. Is there anything you feel you can’t live without? Is there any priority greater than God? Do you have a dream you would sacrifice everything to realize? Does God take first place in your life? Do you trust God more than you trust what your hands have made?

Hi Lori,

Unfortunately the system of this and most other western countries, (Capitalism) is a form of idolatry. The worship or following of something other than God has a way of creeping up on you, especially if you are uninformed. How many times have we all allowed ourselves to make a priority of something other than Our Heavenly Father? It may not be intentional or understood... but still it happens. American Idol, fan clubs, or your favorite stars; sounds innocent, but is it. What message do we send to the coming generation, what habits do we help establish that will be even harder to overcome?

Deuteronomy 29:18 (NIV)
Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.

Consider this passage the next time you skip Church because it’s “Super Bowl Sunday.” No matter how small or subtle it is, any rejection of Christ is sin. Jesus had good reason to plead our case.

Luke 23:34 (NIV)
Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."…

As always… you push the envelope.

Blessings,
Matt.

Lori this is a very challenging post. When we realize that ANYTHING that stands between us and God functions as an idol, it shakes us at out foundations! This is a clarion call to wake up and see where our allegiance truly lies. Good post.

Hi Matt, I so appreciate that comment. I'm convicted also by this post...how much time do I spend on the computer? The internet and being online seems to be my connection to the world these days, but I need to always "check" to make sure spending time with God is my first priority. Really, thanks for your thoughts. It's always good hearing from you. God bless!

This is one post which makes you stop and think if we are truly worshiping God or or we worshiping Him for what He can give us? It is so easy to get caught up in the "things" of this world. It is so easy to try to keep up with the Jones. What we need to do is seek a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God who provides all! All that we have belongs to God.

Beautiful and very truthful post Lori!

Love you!

Hey Sharon,

Thanks for your comment. Most of this is taken from the NLT Commentary. God has a way to make us differentiate between seeking His face or seeking His hand. God bless!

Because we grew up poor, I learned to have lived with nothing and if I have something, I don't obsess over it since I know they're just stuff which will be gone or vanish or never last----so I know that. I don't have any idols. I always put my trust in God.....my Mom taught us that since we were kids, even when I was still a Catholic.

There you go moving my spirit again:) You cease to amaze me... I wish more people had your heart and courage..

~ You still move me :) ~

The rich young man was a good example of your teaching. He told Jesus that he had done all that he said, and wanted to know what he still lacked. Jesus replied, Go sell all you have and come follow me.. Sadly he hung his head and walked away, because as you so eloquently stated, he put his trust in the idol god of money...

My prayer is that some how believers will grasp on to this concept and cling to God, the only one who deserve our worship..

Great powerful mini packed message- Thank you :)

Ps I posted a new article Sunday, titled "the colloidal Junkies" has to with this topic.. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have and do enjoy your words from the Lord...

Many Many Many Blessings to you and your family..

God bless you Lori
In much affection
